Language:
English is commonly spoken throughout Sri Lanka, less so in rural areas such as the Eastern Province where we are. Outside of the towns and hotels you may be less understood, but more warmly greeted, so take on the challenge of meeting the locals. You will find them eager to practice whatever language skills they have on you. Vakarai, like most of the province, is largely Tamil speaking, and you will find it a fascinating culture if you wish to adventure into it’s lifestyle, cuisine, dance or music. As you travel up & down the coast you will also discover Sinhalese, Muslim and Christian friendly communities too.
And if all efforts fail in making yourself understood, nothing else conveys friendship as a smile or a delightful head-bobble.
